Check what is actually saturated
Open the operating systemβs task or activity monitor and look at CPU, memory, disk and network usage while the computer feels slow. A drive at 100%, memory constantly full or one runaway application provides a more useful clue than general frustration.
Reduce startup load
Many applications add background services and startup entries. Disable nonessential startup programs and remove software you no longer use. Keep security and device-management tools that are required by your organization.
Storage and memory upgrades
Replacing an old mechanical hard drive with an SSD can dramatically improve responsiveness. Adding RAM can help when the system frequently exhausts memory and begins using storage as temporary memory. Check compatibility before purchasing parts.
Heat can reduce performance
Dust, blocked vents or failing fans can cause the processor to reduce speed to control temperature. If the computer becomes unusually hot or the fan runs at maximum speed during light work, cooling should be inspected.
