Stop writing new data
When files are accidentally deleted, new data may overwrite recoverable information. Avoid installing recovery software onto the same drive you are trying to recover and do not continue using the computer unnecessarily.
Hardware failure requires caution
Clicking drives, repeated disconnects, burning smells or a drive that is no longer detected can indicate physical failure. Repeated power cycling can make some failures worse. Important business, legal or irreplaceable personal data may justify professional recovery rather than repeated DIY attempts.
Recovery is not a backup strategy
Successful recovery is never guaranteed. Use automatic backups and keep at least one copy separate from the computer. For valuable data, periodically test that backup files can actually be restored.
