Choosing a Laptop for School or University

A student laptop should survive daily travel, last through classes and run the software required by the program—not just look good in a spec sheet.

Check program requirements first

Before buying, review the school or faculty technology requirements. Engineering, architecture, animation, data science and media programs may specify Windows-only applications or dedicated graphics. A lightweight Chromebook may be perfect for browser-based coursework but unsuitable when specialized desktop applications are mandatory.

Weight, battery life, charger size and screen brightness become important when the laptop is carried between classrooms. A sturdy 13- or 14-inch system often balances workspace and portability well, while larger systems can suit students who need more screen area or graphics performance.

Budget for the full setup

Include a protective sleeve, backup method and any required adapters. If the laptop will also be the student’s main home computer, an external monitor and keyboard can make long study sessions more comfortable.
