The cheapest immediate option is not always the lowest-cost choice over the next few years.

Repair makes sense when

  • The computer still meets your performance needs.
  • The problem is isolated to a battery, SSD, fan, keyboard or other economical part.
  • The system supports a current operating system and required software.
  • The repair cost is modest compared with replacement.

Replacement becomes more attractive when

  • Several components are failing or worn.
  • The computer cannot run supported software.
  • Performance is inadequate even after realistic upgrades.
  • A major board or display repair approaches the value of a much newer system.

Do not forget migration costs

A new computer also requires setup, application installation, file migration and possibly new adapters or peripherals. For businesses, employee downtime and software licensing can be significant. Include those costs when comparing repair and replacement.
